Upstate New York letter carrier indicted for stealing mail

A letter carrier who allegedly stole gift cards from the mail has been indicted for mail theft, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

Thomas J. Joslin, 57, of North Syracuse, was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from at least 2015 to 2019.

He plead not guilty during his initial appearance on August 31, 2020. Joslin was released on conditions.

The indictment

The indictment states that Joslin stole a Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card and two prepaid rebate cards from the mail in 2019. Altogether the items were worth hundreds of dollars. 

Joslin was charged with three counts of theft of mail by postal employee. Each count carries a sentence of up to 5 years in prison, up to 3 years of supervised release, and up to $250,000 in fines.

The case was investigated by the USPS Office of Inspector General.
