Joel Margulies convicted of securities fraud

On August 13, Joel J. Margulies, former head of marketing and investor relations at All American Pet Company (AAPT) and Starship Snacks, was convicted of securities fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, and illegally transferring a firearm after a seven-day trial in Manhattan federal court, according to court records. 

Margulies, 75, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, also pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine the day after the trial.

Margulies is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff on December 16.

He is free on bond.

Upstate New York woman indicted for lying to grand jury about a murder

Update: Shanna Smith has pleaded guilty.

A woman who allegedly lied to a federal grand jury about her cousin’s involvement in the death of man outside a party in Buffalo, New York, has been indicted and is facing up to 20 years in prison.

On July 17, 2019, Shanna Smith, 25, was arrested and charged with false declarations before a grand jury and obstruction of justice. She pled not guilty and was released on her own recognizance.

Head of international burglary crew requests move to hospital

The jailed leader of an international burglary crew who has allegedly been committing burglaries for over 20 years has asked a federal judge to move him to a hospital so he can receive mental health treatment.

In October 2018, Damir Pejcinovic, 44, of Manhattan, was indicted on multiple charges in connection with a string of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the U.S. and Europe between 2006 and 2017.

Brooklyn woman indicted for posing as attorney

On June 27, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that a Brooklyn woman had been indicted on multiple charges including grand larceny, identity theft, and practicing law without a license for pretending to be an attorney and defrauding three clients out of $4,700.

According to the District Attorney, Natasha Riley, 56, of Flatbush, Brooklyn, allegedly held herself out as a licensed attorney with an office at 150 Kenilworth Place in Flatbush for around two years. She adopted the last name of an actual attorney with the same first name in order to deceive prospective clients. The attorney contacted the District Attorney’s office after she found out that her name was being used.

Upstate New York man admits to leaking grand jury information

On June 21, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York announced that a former grand juror had pled guilty to leaking secret grand jury information to a number of people between November 2016 and May 2017.

According to court filings, Casey Lipps, 26, of North Tonawanda, New York, was selected to serve on a federal grand jury in October 2016. North Tonawanda is a city of around 32,000 located midway between Buffalo and Niagara Falls in western New York.
