A Bronx man who stockpiled bomb-making materials in his bedroom was sentenced to 3 years in prison on Wednesday.

Tyler Toro, 28, lived with his twin brother Christian Toro in their mother’s apartment in the Bronx.

Christian Toro sentenced to 6 years in prison

A former Harlem charter school teacher who was arrested after authorities found a cache of bomb-making materials in his Bronx apartment was sentenced to 70 months in prison on Wednesday.

Christian Toro, 28, came under suspicion after a bomb threat was called in to the Harlem high school where he worked as a teacher on December 4, 2017.

Law enforcement arrested a 16-year-old student for making the bomb threat and discovered that she was having a sexual relationship with Toro, and that he had told her to call the school and say there’s a bomb in the building.

Twin brothers plead guilty to bomb-making charges

Around 9 months after authorities found a cache of bomb-making materials in their Bronx apartment, Christian Toro and Tyler Toro, both 28, pled guilty to explosives charges on Monday in Manhattan federal court.

Christian Toro came under suspicion in January after a bomb threat was called in to the Harlem high school where he worked as a teacher. A student was arrested for calling in the bomb threat, and Toro resigned abruptly a short time later. Shortly after he resigned, his brother returned a work laptop to the school, and a school employee found a copy of a bomb-making book on the laptop.

Christian Toro jailed pending trial

On February 15, law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at the Bronx apartment of twin brothers Christian and Tyler Toro, both 27. Agents found more than 30 pounds of explosive precursor chemicals and a handwritten note stating “under the full moon the small ones will know terror” among other items. The brothers were arrested and hit with explosives charges. Both defendants have been detained since their arrests.

According to the criminal complaint, Christian Toro came under suspicion in January after a bomb threat was called in to the Harlem high school where he worked as a teacher. A 15-year old student was arrested, and Toro abruptly resigned. Shortly after he resigned, his brother returned a work laptop to the school, and a school employee found a copy of a bomb-making book on the laptop. When law enforcement agents interviewed Toro, he claimed that he had not meant to download the book, and that he had only looked at the table of contents.

Toro was arrested and charged with statutory rape in an unrelated case around this time.

Twin brothers hit with bomb-making charges

On February 15, 2018, twin brothers Christian and Tyler Toro, both 27, were arrested and hit with federal explosives charges after law enforcement agents found a cache of bomb-making materials at their home in the Pelham Parkway section of the Bronx.

According to the complaint and a press briefing held at NYPD headquarters, Christian Toro came under suspicion after a bomb threat was called in to the Harlem high school where he worked as a teacher in December 2017. A 15-year old student was arrested in connection with that incident, and Toro abruptly resigned a short time later. On January 12, Christian had his brother Tyler return a work laptop to the school, and a technical specialist at the school found a copy of a bomb-making book on the laptop. School officials promptly notified the NYPD.
